Girls Campaign wishes to express gratitude to Setlist Management http://www.setlistmanagement.com, organizer of Underwater Music Festival http://www.facebook.com/UnderwaterMusicFest, for making people aware of the campaign to sponsor/educate/empower 3,000 girls in the developing world. Underwater Music Festival, at only 3 years old, is already the largest water festival in the northwest. And what a great heart, too.
One dollar and five cents
07.25.11
$1 hires Amarech. She takes a .05 cent razor and removes either part or all of a girl’s external female genital organs for cultural or other nontherapeutic reasons in an ancient custom known as female genital cutting. One dollar and five cents. Then a lifetime of possible medical and psychological pain begins.
It is estimated that over 140 million women in the world have undergone some form of female genital mutilation. It is endemic in nearly 30 countries. An estimated 8,000 girls endure FGC every day. 250 per hour. 4 per minute. This is what is was like for eight-year-old Selamawit Samel.

“I am treated with great prestige, with great respect. “In the busy time, I can do 20 per day to supplement my income. But if I get another income, I will leave this job.” Amarech Lindad, FGM practitioner.
